Planning a Road Trip
by: Charles O'Ryan

Road trips can be fun and an entertaining way to travel. While traveling to your destination, they can also help provide time to get closer with friends or family. With a little creativity and some planning, there are endless possibilities of things to do while on the road. In this article you will find some simple tips and strategies to plan a successful road trip and also make the most of it.

The first strategy for planning a successful road trip is to plan out most stops beforehand. It can be extremely frustrating to try to find places such as hotels, restaurants, and rest stops while on the road. At the same time, leaving some of the restaurant choices or other arrangements to be made while on the road can break up some of the monotony and allow room to make changes according to how you and other passengers feel at the moment.

Everyone knows the fastest way to get anywhere is a straight line. It is in this fashion that interstates often give the opportunity to reach your destination fastest. They offer more straight lines, less stopping, and gentle curves to keep you on your way. Usually this means of transportation is the method used the most; however, it may not suit your goals while on a road trip. Many entertaining and memorable locations are off the beaten path and require you to venture a little ways off of the densely populated interstate.

Another strategy coincides with planning on a chunk of your stops beforehand. Creating short term goals and looking ahead only a few hours until your next stop is a great strategy to make the trip seem faster than it actually is.

One tip that any driver will tell you is to keep yourself busy while on the road. Many people enjoy using music to keep them awake and alert for long stretches of driving. Depending on where you are traveling radio stations may also fade in and out and can be frustrating to keep changing stations every time you enter a new city area, so it would be a great idea to bring a MP3 player with an FM transmitter or some CDs to keep yourself sane.

Even if you are not hungry, thirsty, or have to use the restroom, it is a good idea to stop regularly and take a little walk. Muscles can become stiff and achy if not used for a while. Using your muscles for a short walk around will keep you more alert for the rest of the trip.

Road trips can be fun and enjoyable for everyone involved. It is more personal of an adventure than taking a plane, and it allows for you to explore and discover attractions, restaurants, and scenes you never knew existed. Using the strategies and tips described above will help you turn any road trip into a successful one.
